The School traces its origin to the Department of Technical Engineering of Minjiang Vocational University founded in 1984. After the university was upgraded to an undergraduate institution in September 2002, the Department of Computer Science was established. In June 2018, it was renamed the School of Computer and Control Engineering to meet disciplinary development needs. In December 2023, it was restructured through the merger with the former School of Mathematics and Data Science (School of Software), and officially renamed the School of Computer and Big Data.
The School currently has 152 faculty and staff members, including 112 full-time teachers, 21 professors, 44 associate professors / senior engineers, 5 doctoral supervisors and 57 master supervisors. A total of 66 teachers hold doctoral degrees, and double-qualified and double-competent teachers account for 60% of the faculty. It boasts 1 national-level talent, 1 member of the Teaching Advisory Board for Software Engineering Major of the Ministry of Education, 1 high-level talent of Jiangsu 333 Project, 1 talent of Hebei 21st Century San San San Project, 1 Fujian Provincial Hundred Talents Program talent, 3 talents of Fujian Provincial Ten-Thousand Talents Project, 1 Fujian Provincial Leading Talent in Education, 18 high-level talents (Class A/B/C), 1 Provincial Famous Teacher, 1 talent of Eagle Program, 2 talents of Fujian Provincial University New Century Excellent Talent Support Program, and 6 talents of Fujian Provincial University Outstanding Young Scientific Research Talent Training Program. In addition, the School flexibly academically employs Academician Lin Huimin from the Chinese Academy of Sciences as the chief consultant, and invites many professors from well-known domestic universities to guide research teams, injecting strong impetus into the School’s development.
Guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the School follows the general requirements for Party building in the new era and adheres to the fundamental task of moral education. Centering on the orientation of applied technology education and highlighting applied talent cultivation, it strives to build the Concentric Circle Party Building Brand. Following the philosophy of integrating Party affairs with administrative affairs, it forms a mechanism for unified planning, deployment and advancement of Party building and administrative work, and implements Party leadership throughout the whole process of school operation and governance. The School is selected as one of the first batch of Fujian Provincial Model Party Building Colleges for cultivation and construction. It currently owns 1 National Model Party Branch for Party Building Work, 2 Fujian Provincial University Model Party Branches for Party Building Work, and 1 Fujian Provincial Dual-Leading Teacher Party Branch Secretary Studio. Its educational program on organizational cultivation won Fujian Provincial Excellent Ideological and Political Work Project for Universities, and the Second Faculty Party Branch was rated as an Advanced Primary Party Organization of Fuzhou City.
The School has achieved remarkable results in disciplinary construction. Electronic Information is selected as a backbone discipline of Fujian Provincial First-class Applied Universities. In 2024, it was successfully approved for the Master of Electronic Information professional degree authorization, and completed the first enrollment in 2025, admitting 115 professional postgraduates majoring in Computer Technology and Artificial Intelligence. In terms of degree authorization cultivation, the School has a Fujian Provincial Doctoral Degree Cultivation Point in Electronic Information, as well as two master’s degree cultivation points in Computer Science and Technology and Intelligent Science and Technology, both of which have met the application standards for formal master’s degree authorization. Since 2017, the School has carried out in-depth cooperation with Fuzhou University, Fujian Normal University, Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University and other universities, and has jointly cultivated more than 130 postgraduates majoring in computer-related fields, laying a solid foundation for degree authorization construction.
The School has well-established research platforms, including Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory of Information Processing and Intelligent Control, Digital Fujian Internet of Things Laboratory for Intelligent Production, Joint Research and Development Center for New Generation Information Technology of Smart Marine Fisheries and Intelligent Production, and Fujian Provincial Research Center for Human-Computer Interaction Technology of Mental Health. Focusing on cutting-edge technologies including the Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and Big Data, it conducts in-depth research on application scenarios such as engineering intelligence, marine informatization and smart healthcare, and has achieved outstanding research results.
Precisely targeting the intelligent transformation and upgrading needs of small and medium-sized enterprises in Fujian Province, the School takes talent cultivation and technological innovation as the driving force, providing solid intellectual and technical support for enterprises. In the past five years, the total research funds received by the School have exceeded 50 million yuan. It has undertaken 18 national projects, 64 provincial and ministerial projects, and more than 160 university-enterprise cooperative projects, with a single project fund reaching 5 million yuan. It has completed the transfer of more than 100 invention patents, and led the formulation of 3 national standards and 2 industrial standards. Faculty teams have won 2 First Prizes, 1 Second Prize and 2 Third Prizes of Provincial and Ministerial Scientific and Technological Progress Awards, fully demonstrating the School’s core supporting role in regional industrial upgrading.
The School deeply promotes industry-education integration. It jointly establishes Minjiang University Artificial Intelligence Industry College (a Provincial Demonstrative Modern Industry College) with 6 specialized, refined, distinctive and innovative enterprises and technological giant enterprises including Raycloud Network, Medical Union Care and Anheng Information. Focusing on key end-edge-cloud collaborative technologies of Artificial Intelligence, the School creates a 3+X university-enterprise cooperation model and a project-driven applied talent cultivation model, accurately meeting the needs of regional industrial intelligent upgrading and providing talent and intellectual support for the high-quality development of the digital economy.
The School features a rational major layout, offering 8 undergraduate majors: Computer Science and Technology, Information Security, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science and Big Data Technology, Software Engineering, Communication Engineering, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, and Applied Statistics, with 2,118 current full-time students. Among them, Computer Science and Technology is a National First-class Undergraduate Specialty. Giving full play to its advantages in major construction, the School jointly sets up an Innovative Experimental Class with the University of Science and Technology of China, actively exploring a new model for top-notch innovative talent cultivation. In recent years, faculty teams have achieved fruitful educational and teaching results, including 2 Second Prizes of National Teaching Achievement Awards, 3 Special Prizes and 2 Second Prizes of Provincial Teaching Achievement Awards.
The School attaches great importance to the cultivation of students’ innovative ability and has achieved remarkable results. In the past five years, students have won 126 national awards in disciplinary competitions, including the National Second Prize in Challenge Cup Competition, Silver Award in Internet Plus Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, First Prize in Huawei Cup Intelligent Design Competition and other major awards. Students have published 63 papers in core journals, including 10 papers in SCI Zone 1 journals, and obtained 47 intellectual property rights. A total of 60 innovation and entrepreneurship training program projects for college students at provincial level and above have been approved, including 20 national projects. The quality of talent cultivation has been widely recognized by society. The graduate employment rate has exceeded 95% for consecutive years. Many outstanding graduates have joined well-known enterprises such as Huawei and Tencent and cooperative institutions, playing an important role in industrial digital transformation and becoming the backbone driving industrial development.
