Founded in August 2018, the School of Journalism and Communication of Minjiang University traces its origin to the Journalism major established by the former Minjiang Vocational University in 1984. Many of its graduates have become backbones in the journalism and communication industry in Fujian Province and even across the country.
The School boasts a backbone discipline of Fujian Province — Journalism and Communication, and one of the first master's degree programs of Minjiang University — Journalism and Communication (including two research directions: Digital Marketing Communication and Cross-Strait Cultural Communication). It offers four undergraduate majors: Advertising (including Cross-Strait Cooperation), Cultural Industry Management, Network and New Media, and Digital Media Art. Among them, the Advertising major is a National First-class Undergraduate Specialty and a National Characteristic Specialty.
According to the 2025 Alumni Association Ranking of Advertising Majors in Chinese Universities (Applied Type), the Advertising major ranks in Grade A++ and is rated as a Top Applied Major in China. In the China University and Discipline Evaluation Report (2018-2019) released by the China University Education Evaluation Network, the Advertising major ranks 7th. In addition, according to the 2018 Undergraduate Major Social Influence Ranking released by the Higher Education Communication and Public Opinion Monitoring Research Center of Communication University of China, the Advertising major ranks 5th, successfully becoming a well-known and regionally first-class major in China.
The School has the University Digital Media Industry-Education Integration Innovation and Application Demonstration Base of the Ministry of Education, the Fujian Research Center for Digital Media Economy (a Fujian Provincial Social Science Research Base), and the New Media Communication Research Center (a Fujian University Humanities and Social Sciences Research Base). It has built a Provincial Digital Creative Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center and a Provincial Media Technology Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, and set up industrial-grade film and television editing and production laboratories, photography and video laboratories, non-linear editing laboratories, studio training rooms, and VR maker laboratories.
The School currently has 914 full-time undergraduate students, 71 master's students (including 37 joint-training students), and 3 joint-training doctoral students; there are 55 faculty and staff members. Among full-time teachers, there are 6 professors and 14 associate professors, with doctoral degrees accounting for 60%.
In the past five years, the School has introduced 1 New Century Talent of the Ministry of Education and Minjiang Scholar Distinguished Professor, 3 Minjiang Scholar Chair Professors, 2 Mindu Scholar Chair Professors; 3 people were selected as Fujian Provincial High-level Talents (Class C), 1 person was selected into the Fujian University New Century Excellent Talent Support Program, 3 people were selected into the Fujian University Outstanding Young Scientific Research Talent Training Program, 1 person won the title of Fujian Gold Medal Craftsman, 1 person won the title of Mindu Talent Taiwan Excellent Talent in the 1st Fuzhou City, 24 people obtained master supervisor qualifications, 1 person obtained doctoral supervisor qualification, and there are 22 double-qualified teachers.
Since its establishment, the School has always adhered to the socialist direction of running a school, adhered to the school-running philosophy of not seeking the largest, but seeking the best and adapting to social needs and the school-running purpose of rooting in Fuzhou, facing the market, focusing on quality and highlighting application. It closely focuses on the fundamental task of moral education and cultivating people, cultivating builders and successors of socialism who are developed in an all-round way morally, intellectually, physically, aesthetically and laboriously.
In the past five years, it has won 1 Second Prize and 1 Third Prize of Fujian Provincial Excellent Social Science Achievements, 1 Second Prize of National Teaching Achievement Award (ranking 5th), and 2 Second Prizes of Fujian Provincial Higher Education Teaching Achievement Awards. It has been approved for 4 National Social Science Foundation projects, 10 major provincial and ministerial projects, and 22 other provincial and ministerial projects. Students have won nearly 600 awards in national and provincial discipline competitions and College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program projects.
The School adheres to open and cooperative education, deeply promotes industry-education integration and government-university-enterprise cooperation, and constantly explores new models of applied talent training. It has established cooperative relations with the College of Communication and Information of the University of Kentucky in the United States, selecting outstanding students to study at the University of Kentucky; it has signed a memorandum of cooperation with the University of the West of Scotland in the United Kingdom to promote cooperation in education and academic research; it has jointly established the Digital Media and Creative Industry College with governing units such as Fujian Radio and Television Group and Fuzhou Daily.
In the future, the School will closely focus on the actual needs of the industrial chain and innovation chain, take the connotative construction of disciplines and majors as the core, take the applied transformation as the key breakthrough, fully align with the high-quality development needs of the media industry and cultural industry in Fujian Province, especially in Fuzhou City. It will continuously optimize the talent training system, improve the scientific research innovation capacity and social service level, further promote the school-running quality to a new height, strive to build a first-class in the province and well-known in the country demonstration college for digital creative industry-education integration, and write a new chapter of higher education serving local development.
