Clothing and Design Faculty was founded in 2003. It is one of the important bases for high-level talent training and scientific and technological innovation in the textile and garment industry in Fujian Province, featuring an early establishment history, strong faculty strength and high academic level. It serves as the Chairman Unit of Fujian Provincial Applied Undergraduate Textile and Garment Major Teaching Alliance. Textile Science and Engineering is a Fujian Provincial First-class Key Discipline and a candidate unit for master’s degree authorization. Fashion Design and Engineering is a National Characteristic Major. Both Fashion Design and Engineering and Clothing and Apparel Design have been selected into National First-class Undergraduate Specialty Construction Sites under the Ministry of Education’s Double Ten-Thousand Plan. Textile Engineering has been selected into the Provincial First-class Undergraduate Specialty Construction Site.
With Textile Science and Engineering and Design Science as its backbone disciplines, the Faculty offers three undergraduate majors: Textile Engineering, Fashion Design and Engineering, and Clothing and Apparel Design. Fashion Design and Engineering was recognized as a National Characteristic Major in 2010. Textile Science and Engineering was approved as a Provincial First-class Key Discipline in 2013 and a Provincial Key Applied Discipline in 2017. The Textile and Garment Specialty Cluster was approved as Fujian Provincial Demonstrative Applied Specialty Cluster in 2018. Textile Engineering, a Fujian Provincial Characteristic Major Serving Industrial Development, passed IEET International Professional Accreditation in 2018. The Modern Textile and Garment Industry College was approved as Fujian Provincial Modern Industry College in 2023. In 2024, the Second Faculty Party Branch of Clothing and Design Faculty was rated as the 4th Batch of National Model Party Branch Cultivation and Construction Unit, and selected into the National and Fujian Provincial Dual-Leading Teacher Party Branch Secretary Strong Country Tour Special Action Team. Indicators including graduate employment rate and enterprise satisfaction rank among the top textile and garment higher education institutions in Fujian Province.
The Faculty currently has 75 faculty and staff members, including 52 full-time teachers, among whom are 7 professors, 18 associate professors and 25 doctoral degree holders. The faculty team consists of 1 Mindu Scholar Chair Professor, 1 Provincial Scientific and Technological Innovation Team of Functional Textile Fibers, 1 Provincial Teaching Team of Fashion Art Engineering, and 14 Fujian Provincial High-level Talents. The high-caliber faculty lays a solid foundation for high-level talent cultivation.
The Faculty hosts three provincial innovation platforms: Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory of Functional Textile Fibers and Products, Fujian Provincial Clothing Industry Technology Development Base, and Fujian Provincial Clothing Creative Design Center, as well as two municipal and departmental research centers, providing solid support for undergraduate and postgraduate education.
Covering a building area of 12,800 square meters with a total equipment value of over 37 million yuan, the Faculty has built Fujian Provincial Textile and Garment Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center. It has formed a complete industrial chain laboratory system covering filament spinning, yarn spinning, weaving, dyeing and finishing, printing, garment manufacturing and textile and garment testing, providing an excellent practical environment for students. Meanwhile, the Faculty has established practical education bases with more than 20 leading enterprises including Hengshen Group and LILANG Group, and cultivates high-quality applied talents through industry-education integration.
At present, the Faculty has more than 1,200 full-time undergraduate students, and the quality of talent cultivation has been improving year by year. In the past five years, students have won a total of 380 awards, including national bronze awards and provincial gold awards in the Internet Plus Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, provincial bronze awards in the Challenge Cup National University Students Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Competition, the 28th China Fashion Design Newcomer Award, bronze awards in the 26th Hanbo Cup China International Young Designer Competition, gold awards in the National University Graduate Fashion Design Competition, and first prizes in Fujian Provincial Career Planning Competition. Students have presided over more than 30 innovation and entrepreneurship training program projects at provincial level and above.
Centering on the demands of Fujian’s trillion-yuan textile and garment industry and its core industrial chain and adhering to the purpose of serving local leading industries, the Faculty has continuously consolidated its disciplinary foundation. As a candidate unit for the master’s degree program in Textile Science and Engineering, it has formed three disciplinary orientations: Textile Engineering, Textile Materials, and Fashion Design and Engineering. It has developed distinctive disciplinary characteristics in the research fields of functional fibers, advanced textile materials, modern garment technology and intangible cultural heritage costume culture, enjoying a leading position in Fujian Province and certain influence nationwide.
The Faculty has achieved remarkable results in teaching reform during 2021–2025. It has won 1 National Teaching Achievement Award and 4 Provincial Teaching Achievement Awards (including 1 First Prize); 7 Textile Light Higher Textile Education Teaching Achievement Awards issued by China National Textile and Apparel Council (including 1 Special Prize); 1 National First-class Undergraduate Course and 4 Provincial First-class Courses; undertaken 3 Provincial Major Teaching Reform Projects and 10 Ministry of Education Industry-University Collaborative Education Projects; won 1 Third Prize in Fujian Provincial University Teachers’ Teaching Innovation Competition; obtained 3 Provincial Excellent Curriculum Ideological and Political Teaching Cases and built 1 Provincial Demonstrative Curriculum Ideological and Political Course; approved 2 1+X Vocational Skill Level Certificate Projects; published 11 monographs and textbooks, 2 of which were awarded Ministerial Excellent Textbooks.
In the past five years, the Faculty has obtained more than 150 new research projects, including 2 national projects, over 50 provincial and ministerial projects and more than 70 horizontal projects, with total research funds exceeding 34 million yuan. It has published more than 320 papers, 14 monographs and textbooks, and obtained over 320 authorized patents. Focusing on the construction of three provincial platforms including Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory of Functional Textile Fibers and Products, the Faculty has won 4 Fujian Provincial Science and Technology Awards and 2 China Top Ten Textile Science and Technology Awards. It has continuously promoted the transformation of patent achievements, with 30 completed achievement transformations and a total transfer value of over 2.7 million yuan.
The Faculty actively serves social development. Since 2011, it has provided textile and garment technical training for developing countries, with more than 400 trainees trained. Fujian Provincial Textile and Garment Industrial Cluster Window Service Platform built by the Faculty provides over 1,000 services for the textile and garment industry every year. It takes the lead in establishing Fujian Provincial Applied Undergraduate Textile and Garment Major Teaching Alliance to promote the development of textile and garment higher education in Fujian Province.
The Faculty attaches great importance to international exchanges and cooperation. It has established sound cooperative relations with the University of Southampton (UK), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Feng Chia University (Taiwan), Donghua University, Jiangnan University and other universities, providing exchange opportunities for a large number of undergraduates. It has actively carried out cross-strait exchanges and cooperation, with nearly 100 students in 10 batches completing exchange studies in Taiwan.
In recent years, through continuous optimization and improvement, the Faculty has formed the industrial chain disciplinary cluster advantage integrating textile materials, textile engineering, garment engineering, fashion design and costume culture. It highlights the characteristics of high-quality applied innovative talent cultivation. The quality of talent cultivation has been widely recognized by all sectors of society, and the social reputation of graduates has been rising year by year.
