The School of Materials and Chemical Engineering of Minjiang University boasts a long history. Its origin can be traced back to the Department of Chemistry of Fuzhou Higher Normal College founded in 1958, and undergraduate programs were officially launched in 2001. The School currently offers four undergraduate majors: Applied Chemistry, Polymer Materials and Engineering, Pharmaceutical Engineering, and Chemistry (Teacher Education). Among them, Applied Chemistry is a Provincial First-class Undergraduate Specialty Construction Site, a Provincial Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform Pilot Major and a Provincial Comprehensive Reform Pilot Major; Polymer Materials and Engineering is a Provincial First-class Undergraduate Specialty Construction Site and a Provincial Characteristic Major Serving Local Industries.
The discipline of Materials and Chemical Engineering has been selected into Fujian Provincial Cultivation Project for Doctoral Degree Granting Units. Its three supporting fundamental disciplines — Materials Science, Chemistry and Engineering — all rank among the global top 1% in ESI. Chemical Engineering ranks among the global top 401–500 in ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. A three-level supporting system and coordinated development pattern of fundamental disciplines – interdisciplinary disciplines – industrial applications has been formed.
The School has a high-caliber faculty team, consisting of 69 full-time teachers. Among them, doctoral degree holders account for 90%, teachers with senior professional titles account for 65%, master supervisors account for 61%, double-qualified and double-competent teachers account for 53%, and teachers with overseas experience account for 53%. The School has 41 talents at provincial level and above, accounting for 58.6% of the faculty, including 1 Teaching Master of the National Ten-Thousand Talents Program of the Central Organization Department, 1 Provincial Class A Talent, 1 National Young Teaching Master in Petroleum and Chemical Education, 4 World’s Top 2% Scientists, as well as 1 provincial teaching team and 1 provincial research team respectively, providing solid support for teaching and scientific research.
Closely centering on major national and Fujian provincial strategic demands, the School has defined two professional degree fields of Materials Engineering and Chemical Engineering and six distinctive research directions, and continuously improves its disciplinary strength. It hosts 6 provincial and ministerial research platforms, including Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory of Marine Sensing Functional Materials and Fujian Provincial Engineering Research Center for New Chinese Lacquer Materials, together with 7 municipal and departmental research platforms, including Fujian Provincial Public Service Platform for R&D of High-end Fine Chemicals (Fujian Provincial Department of Science and Technology), Fuzhou Municipal Public Service Platform for Transformation of Scientific and Technological Achievements of Functional Polymer Materials, Fuzhou Municipal Industry Technology Innovation Center for Flexible Functional Materials, and Fuzhou Municipal Industry Technology Innovation Center for Pharmaceutical Preparation and Detection, covering functional coating materials, flexible sensing functional materials, high-end fine chemicals, biomedicine and other fields.
The School has built a Provincial Modern Industry College of New Chemical Materials. Through the council governance structure jointly constructed by four subjects including government, university, industry association and enterprise, it promotes in-depth integration of government, industry, university and research. Minjiang University Research and Testing Center for Pharmaceutical Preparations is the first university laboratory in Fujian Province accredited by CNAS, with testing capacity and management standards meeting national accreditation and international mutual recognition requirements.
In the past five years, the School has undertaken 306 research projects of various types, including 17 National Natural Science Foundation projects, 2 major special projects of Fujian Provincial Department of Science and Technology, 1 provincial key technology innovation and industrialization project, 2 provincial marine economic development special projects, and 4 Fuzhou Municipal Open Bidding Projects. It has 23 projects with research funds above one million yuan (including 2 projects above five million yuan), with total received research funds reaching 65.0008 million yuan. The School has won 10 provincial and ministerial scientific and technological awards (6 as the first completing unit), published 280 SCI-indexed papers, obtained 147 authorized patents and completed 45 patent transfers.
The School currently has more than 1,000 undergraduate students and 99 jointly cultivated postgraduate students. Always focusing on students’ growth, the School builds an all-round growth support system with thoughtful educational measures. In the past five years, the quality of student cultivation has been steadily improved with a number of breakthrough achievements. Undergraduates have won 207 provincial and ministerial level and above disciplinary competition awards (including 82 national awards), such as the Special Prize in the National Digital Innovation Competition of Chemical Engineering Processes. Students have published 45 high-level papers (including 13 SCI-indexed papers) and obtained 14 authorized patents.
A total of 956 undergraduate students have graduated, with a postgraduate admission rate of 18.2% and an employment rate of 96.61%, ranking among the top in the university. A total of 65 jointly cultivated postgraduates have graduated with a 100% employment rate, and graduates are widely praised by employers.
At present, closely aligning with trillion-level modern chemical industry cluster and five-hundred-billion-level new materials industry cluster in Fujian Provincial “555X” Industrial Cluster Plan, centering on core tasks including the cultivation of master’s and doctoral degree programs in Materials and Chemical Engineering and the application for engineering education professional accreditation, the School keeps strengthening connotative construction, deepening international exchanges and cooperation, improving scientific management mechanisms, comprehensively upgrading overall work levels, and steadily moving towards the goal of building a high-level applied college with distinctive features and outstanding advantages.
